Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of body mass index (BMI) on traditional 226 Hz tympanometry and wideband tympanometry (WBT) to gain a better understanding of resonance frequency. Patients and Methods: A total of 158 ears of 79 volunteers (19 males, 60 females; mean age: 20.5 years; range, 18 to 27 years) who had normal hearing and normal otoscopic examination findings were included in the study between October 2019 and June 2020. By measuring the weight and height of the participants, their BMI values were classified into three groups: ≤18.5 kg/m2 (underweight), 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2 (normal weight), and ≥25.0 kg/m2 (overweight). Tympanometric evaluations were conducted using the Interacoustics-Titan WBT. Results: The difference of ear canal volume (ECV) was significant between the two sexes (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference in the tympanometric peak pressure, compliance, gradient, and resonance frequency between the sexes (p>0.05). A significant difference was found in the ECV and resonance frequency among the three BMI groups (p<0.05). Accordingly, as the BMI increased, the ECV increased and the resonance frequency decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: The BMI may affect ECV and resonance frequency values which should be considered during the examination

Foliar-applied glyphosate substantially reduced uptake and transport of iron and manganese in sunflower (helianthus annuus L.) plants

Evidence clearly shows that cationic micronutrients in spray solutions reduce the herbicidal effectiveness of glyphosate for weed control due to the formation of metal-glyphosate complexes. The formation of these glyphosate-metal complexes in plant tissue may also impair micronutrient nutrition of nontarget plants when exposed to glyphosate drift or glyphosate residues in soil. In the present study, the effects of simulated glyphosate drift on plant growth and uptake, translocation, and accumulation (tissue concentration) of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) were investigated in sunflower ( Helianthus annuusL.) plants grown in nutrient solution under controlled environmental conditions. Glyphosate was sprayed on plant shoots at different rates between 1.25 and 6.0% of the recommended dosage (i.e., 0.39 and 1.89 mM glyphosate isopropylamine salt). Glyphosate applications significantly decreased root and shoot dry matter production and chlorophyll concentrations of young leaves and shoot tips. The basal parts of the youngest leaves and shoot tips were severely chlorotic. These effects became apparent within 48 h after the glyphosate spray. Glyphosate also caused substantial decreases in leaf concentration of Fe and Mn while the concentration of Zn and Cu was less affected. In short-term uptake experiments with radiolabeled Fe (59Fe), Mn (54Mn), and Zn (65Zn), root uptake of 59Fe and 54Mn was significantly reduced in 12 and 24 h after application of 6% of the recommended dosage of glyphosate, respectively. Glyphosate resulted in almost complete inhibition of root-to-shoot translocation of 59Fe within 12 h and 54Mn within 24 h after application. These results suggest that glyphosate residues or drift may result in severe impairments in Fe and Mn nutrition of nontarget plants, possibly due to the formation of poorly soluble glyphosate-metal complexes in plant tissues and/or rhizosphere interactions

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to examine burnout levels and their determinants among veterinary medicine students. Answers (n = 447) to a survey formed the data of this study. Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Scale, which was adapted to the Turkish language, was used to determine the burnout levels of the students. As a result, burnout levels were obtained as 13.31, 7.82, and 7.69 for Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Accomplishment (PA) components, respectively. Year of study and having a hobby affected three of the burnout components. In order to determine the relationship between students’ burnout levels and students’ tendency to drop out, to work in a different profession after graduation and academic failure, a logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results revealed that year of study, weighted grade point average (WGPA), EE, DP, PA, repeating academic semester(s), number of the repeated academic semester(s), and perceived difficulty of veterinary education were significantly associated with the students’ intention to drop out of the faculty. Gender, living situation, monthly income, EE, DP and PA affected education-occupation mismatch. Furthermore, gender, year of study, WGPA, living situation, monthly income, EE, DP, PA, and perceived difficulty level of the veterinary education influenced repeating academic semester(s). The results of this study reveal that burnout syndrome would lead to students’ dropping out of the faculty, education-occupation mismatch and academic failure. Future studies must be conducted throughout the country to assess burnout syndrome in veterinary students

This study aims at making 8th grade students go through a statistical process and gain experience in this matter and revealing their behaviors, experiences, and difficulties at each stage of this process. Activities were designed in a way allowing the students to experience a statistical process. Then the students were made to get involved in these activities through group work. Data were collected via statistical process activities, the reflection papers of the students concerning the process, and the video-recordings of classroom discussions. The activities were prepared based on Ben-Zvi and Arcavi (2001) as well as expert opinions. The students posed questions that could be directly answered by the help of relevant texts rather than problems that could be solved through data analysis. The groups formed their tables and charts by focusing on just one feature or variable though the data in the activities involved features of more than one variable. As making an inference by interpreting data requires experience, it is recommended in this study that activities be prepared in a way allowing the use of skills of this sort.

Background and Design: The relationship between food and atopic dermatitis (AD) is controversial. Atopy patch test (APT) gained prominence due to low specificity of “fresh prick tests” (FPT) with foods, commonly late occurrence of lesions in AD and, thus, the inconsistencies in anamneses, and being the provocative tests time consuming and risky, as well as due to the role of T lymphocytes in the pathophysiology of the disease. In this study, we investigated the relationship of APT and FPT made with food with SCORAD index assessing the disease severity.Materials and Methods: Forty-five children (21 males and 24 females) aged between 2-15 years who were diagnosed with AD in our outpatient clinic between May 2006 and May 2007 were included in the study. FPT and APT with eggs, milk and wheat flour were performed in all patients. The severity of illness was assessed using the SCORAD index. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 11.0 for Windows. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant

Determining the growth performance of lambs is essential for producers to supply the lamb meat with the features demanded by the market as soon as possible. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the effect of year, birth type and sex of lamb on body weight and various body measurements of Kivircik lambs. Live weights of 612 Kivircik lambs (299 males and 313 females) were used in the study, which were born in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Body measurements of 47 male lambs and 50 female lambs, randomly selected from 508 lambs born in 2014 and 2016, were used in the study. Birth year had significant effect on both live weights and body measurements of lambs in various growth periods. Single born and male lambs are significantly superior in both live weight and body measurements over female and twin born lambs. This situation results in being preferred for both meat production and breeding purposes more than their opponents. In order to have a more productive herd structure, female and twin lambs should be reared according to their needs for a better growth performance. Rump height of single born lambs and chest depth of male lambs were higher than their counterparts throughout the study. Therefore, these two body measurements can be used as reliable parameters for investigation of growth performance of Kivircik lambs

The backcrossing method remains an efficient tool for transferring genes into established crop varieties. In this study; we were focused on evaluating the selected some backcross lines for yield, grain-quality traits and some agronomic traits under field condition. The experiment was conducted using 15 genotypes in randomized completely blocks design with four replications in Trakya ARI experimental field, during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 growing years. Grain yield, days of heading and maturing, plant height and some quality parameters and relationship among these parameters were investigated. According to results, there was statistically difference among genotypes in terms of yield and other investigated characters, except for 1000-kernel weight, test weight. Grain yields decreased in Pehlivan, Aldane, Tekirdağ and Dropia backcross lines. It was determined that TKW increased in the backcross derived lines of the Gelibolu, Dropia and Prostor, gluten value increased in Pehlivan and Tekirdağ cultivars. Backcross line for gluten index of the Pehlivan, Aldane, Gelibolu, Prostor and Dropia cultivars highly increased compared with other components. Sedimentation values of the backcross lines of cultivars decreased in Prostor and increased in Pehlivan, Gelibolu and Dropia. The strongly negative correlations were measured between grain yield and days of maturing (r=-0.689**), plant height (r=-0.655**), and lodging resistant (r=-0.743**). Also, grain yield was negatively correlated with protein ratio (r=-0.608*), gluten value (r=-0.541*), and days of heading (r=-0.607*). The negative correlations were found between grain yield and 1000-kernel weight, test weight, hardness, sedimentation, and winter-kill, as well. The strong positive correlations were measured between protein ratio and gluten, hardness, sedimentation, days of heading and maturing, plant height, and lodging resistant. Grain hardness in genotypes increased with the extension of maturation period of the genotypes. Plant height in genotypes strongly correlated with grain yield, protein ratio, gluten value, gluten index, days of heading and maturing
